Juneteenth marks a very important day in U.S. history. As parents, caregivers, and educators, you might be looking for support in discussing current events and the significance of Juneteenth with your children.
That’s why Age of Learning Curriculum Board member Dr. Cynthia A. Tyson, a professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Ohio State University and an expert in teaching about social justice, multiculturalism, and race, has curated the below list of Juneteenth books for 5- to 10-year olds. Dr. Tyson’s research analyzes how children organize their world through story and how literature can be an important conduit for constructively engaging with children on important topics.
Feel free to preview the books and make selections based on what feels right for you and your child. We hope you find these stories helpful as you navigate dealing with difficult, complicated topics in history and in current events.
Additionally, we’ve also put together a short list of info and the historical background on Juneteenth, which you can find here on our @abcmouse Instagram page.
